Academic Festival Overture was written in 1879 when Brahms was given an honorary doctorate by University of Breslau. For the occasion, Brahms composed the overture. The work is built on themes taken from a memorable collection of German student songs; the songs are developed in a variety of tempos, styles, and moods. In the closing section, the melody is presented in a stately and dramatic manner, and the orchestra plays with full force, bringing the overture to a triumphant conclusion. |

J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos are concerti grossi: a group of solo instruments set in unison and/or contrast with an orchestra. In 1719, Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg commissioned Bach to write music for his orchestra. Two years later, Bach completed a set of six concertos (now known as the Brandenburg Concertos). Imagination, beauty and originality marked these concertos. It is suggested that this arrangement of the third movement be performed following the arrangement of the first movement by Merle Isaac (#33581). |

Cesar Franck's Symphony in D Minor is one of the favorites in the symphonic repetoire. The symphony opens with a Lento, a majestic introduction in which the principle subject of the movement is stated by the basses, a theme curiously reminiscent of a motive from Wagner. The Lento builds great dramatic suspense, growing in intensity and mystery until finally, the Allegro bursts forth triumphantly. Harmonically, today's listener is still charmed with Franck's chromaticism and his fluid use of tonaiity. From the melodic viewpoint, Franck's melodies are gorgeous and satisfying. |

The movement begins to stir restlessly as it progresses. It is one of Beethoven's most singable and lyrical movements. |

The first movement of the second symphony was completed in 1871, and upon hearing the work, Rimsky-Korsakov called this symphony the 'Heroic'. With the heavy use of brass instruments, his impression was that it depicted the Russian Knights in all their grandeur and splendor. The symphony opens with a forceful and energetic theme for strings, quickly followed by the woodwinds in a lighter mood and tempo. The second theme, slower and more lyrical, appears in the strings and woodwinds. The movement closes with the heroic character of the first theme in a powerful and dramatic climax. |

Brahms composed his fourth symphony during his stay in the Austrian Alps in the summers of 1884 and 1885. Realizing the tone of the entire symphony was one of seriousness, Brahms broke tradition by casting the fourth movement, the finale, in the form of a chaconne or passacaglia. The theme, which he took from the chaconne in Bach's Cantata No. 150, Brahms constructed a monumental and powerful set of 34 variations, of which this arrangement includes 16 and the coda. |

Vernon F. Leidig is Professor Emeritus of Music at
California State University Los Angeles where he has been presented the Outstanding
Professor Award for teaching, scholarship, research and professional advancement.
His previous experience included teaching instrumental music in the secondary schools
in Los Angeles, where his teaching principles earned him a Certificate of Merit from
the United States Department of State. Well-known throughout the United States as a
clinician, adjudicator and conductor, Dr. Leidig has published many music education
materials, including college texts and magazine articles, as well as numerous arrangements
for school and community orchestras and bands.
