Edmund Siennicki was born and raised in Cleveland, OH. At the age of 12, he met and talked with Paderewski; which influenced his life greatly. At Kent State University, he earned his bachelor's degree, wrote FIGHT ON FOR KSU which is played at football games, and in 1994 was presented the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the School of Music. At Teachers College, Columbia University, he earned his M.A. Twice his compositions won prizes in the National School Orchestra composition contests. Twice he was composer in residence at the MacDowell Colony. During the last 20 years he has been receiving special awards from ASCAP. He has about 200 publications. He studied composition with Herbert Elwell, electronic music with Sergio Barroso, and consulted with Vincent Persichetti. His teaching career was mainly in the Cleveland Junior High Schools, and also in Michigan and at Kent State University. As a professional musician he played the bassoon and piano. He is active conducting the Medina Symphony Orchestra and Tuba Christmas, as assistant conductor of the 200 piece All Ohio State Fair Band, visiting schools, composing and doing clinics.

	Imagine the stately blue heron standing on one leg in the marshes along Lake Erie. Visible to the careful observer and an awesome spectacle to watch as their majestic wingspan unfolds into flight. This piece calls for a moderate tempo. All players get to play the melody. Bowings and dynamics will make the music more interesting for the audience and performers as the piece comes to a loud ending.
33921	Bonita Dia (Beautiful Day) (Strictly Strings Series) (String Orchestra) ME
	The Spanish title for this Latin-American rhumba means "a beautiful day". Although the piece begins in D minor, it changes to G major where the melody is shared by all instruments and ends in D major. Because a rhumba is a dance, rythmic movement is especially important. The rhythm in Bonita Dia is based upon even eighth notes. Much excitement may be added to the music by including optional percussion instruments.

	Treat your string students to a piece of American history! Great for cross-curricular work! Everyone gets a chance at the melody in this spirited arrangement of the ever-popular Stephen Foster song. With a number of great teaching opportunities including accents, slurs, dotted rhythms and a wide variety of dynamics, this piece is also a wonderful vehicle for teaching your orchestra the importance of balance and a great introduction to the E string for your first violinists.

	Take a tropical holiday with the exotic rhythms and sounds of the Caribbean. Based on the dance rhythms of the beguine, this work will give students lots of practice in syncopation. Optional percussion parts can be added for additional color. Correlates with Strictly Strings, Book 2, page 32.

	Edmund Siennicki offers this special arrangement of four children's carols: 'O Christmas Tree,' 'O Come Little Children,' 'Joy to the World' and 'Jolly Old St. Nicholas.' You'll find it remarkably playable and full-sounding by your elementary group. Rhythms are simple (dotted rhythms are changed to eighth notes) and first position finger patterns (H2 & L2) are the rule throughout. Another gem for the holiday season.

	Your students will love this piece with a Celtic flair! You'll love it because you can teach meter changes (6/8 and 2/4) and modes. A great teaching piece and perfect for first- and second-year students.
45548	Cherry Hill (String Orchestra) ME
	A work for second or third year students, Cherry Hill utilizes rhythms which are characteristic of ragtime music, which was popular during the early years of the twentieth century. In the syncopated rhythms, the ‘off beat’ quartet note should be stressed a little more than the other notes. First violins have a high D which requires third position. The bass also has a D, requiring a shift. At measure 33, the melody is played pizzicato, unison by all instruments, creating an effective contrast. A variety of tempos will work, depending on the experience level of the group.

33960	Dancing Jelly Beans (Strictly Strings) (String Orchestra) ME
	If you're looking for something a little different on your next concert, Dancing Jelly Beans is the perfect piece. While Dancing Jelly Beans can be performed faster or slower than the stated tempo, it should be played in strict time -- since this is dance music in a European style. In 3/4 time, the first phrases are three measures in length, providing contrast to the more common four-measure phrase structure which appears later in the piece. Hooked bowing, slurred bowing and double stops are featured throughout. Changes in dynamics are important for adding excitement and should be emphasized.
35659	Dixie (Strictly Strings) (String Orchestra) ME
	A famous folk song during the 1800's, this tune was one of Abraham Lincoln's favorites. This new arrangement is very playable and a great way to give extra meaning to your student's study of the Civil War. Correlates with Strictly Strings Book 1 Page 35.
33987	Dorian Parade (Strictly Strings) (String Orchestra) ME
	Although the key signature of two sharps suggests the key of D major, Dorian Parade begins with a six-measure introduction starting and ending on E—implying the Dorian mode. The piece spends a considerable amount of time between D major and E Dorian; a brief modulation to D major is evident at ms. 23, with Dorian returning at ms. 39. At the coda in ms. 55, the piece comes to a rousing conclusion in the key of D major.

35632	Golden Harvest (STRICTLY STRINGS) (String Orchestra) ME
	This bouncy piece is a great way to teach the dotted-eighth/sixteenth-note rhythm pattern. It also reinforces extended finger patterns for all instruments, while introducing the first violin section to third position. Although the suggested tempo is 80-96, use the best tempo for your performers, even if it is outside these suggested boundaries. The melody is played in all instruments except the third violin. In order to have an artistic and audience-pleasing performance, dynamics must be observed. Small crescendo and diminuendi can be added where the melody notes ascend and descend.
33920	Hokie Dokie Dumpling (Strictly Strings Series) (String Orchestra) ME
	This piece, written in the A-B-A-C-A form and correlated with Strictly Strings, begins in a playful, light-hearted manner, then takes on a loud and commanding style. The piece uses the keys of G, D, and C major, and includes some use of double stops, staccato, tenuto and slurs. The melody is distributed throughout all sections, and audiences will be delighted by the various changes in dynamics.

	This song was very popular early in the 20th century. It is spirited and bouncy. Hooked bowing is used, along with other bowing. The marked tempo can be changed, if desired.

	An original composition, this gentle dream-like piece will provide a good introduction to 3rd position for the first violins and to half position for string bass. This is a piece that can easily be altered to fit the abilities of your ensemble by changing the tempo and the dynamics. All sections play the melody!

	This piece introduces young performers to music that swings. It is based upon the basic twelve-bar blues chord progression, which begins here after a four-measure introduction. 	This arrangement of Beethoven’s Minuet in G incorporates bowing slurs up to four notes and gives all instruments a chance to play melodic phrases. Paying close attention to the dynamics and melody will keep both the performers and audience interested.

	Playfully written, Scherzando employs mostly separate bows with some two-note slurs, and all instruments are given a chance to play the melody. Although the tempo is marked 88–104, it can be adjusted to suit your orchestra. Dynamics will help the performers build this piece up to a loud ending. 	As the title implies, this moderate waltz should be played in a smooth, lyrical and relaxed manner. Tone quality should receive special attention as the melody is played by all sections of the orchestra. Using key signatures of G and D major, Smooth Sailing includes the use of upbeats, staccato, hooked bowing, and two to three note slurs.

	Spirited Dance exemplifies exuberance of the youthful musicians for which it was composed. Using the Lydian mode in several transpositions, the work contrasts shifting meters and syncopated rhythms with lyrical melodies superimposed over driving eighth note rhythms. The overall effect is one of charged energy.

	Staccato Spiritoso begins in D major, briefly travels to G major, and returns to D. Composed to provide quality teaching and program material for the young string ensemble, emphasis is placed on the staccato style and the corresponding precision which is necessary, while providing lyrical contrast. An eight measure unison passage makes an excellent study in balance and precision. The work should be performed in a quick, happy and peppy manner. All instruments share the melody. Dynamics are important for maximum musical effect. Choose a tempo that best suits the experience level of your ensemble.
