Question: What is the difference between the study score, score, and critical edition of the Beethoven Symphony no. 6 Urtext published by Barenreiter, edited my Del Mar? Answer: The score is what the conductor would use. The study score is intended to be studied it is about the size of a paperback book. The critical commentary is an in depth interpretation of the work. Thank you, Question: I need suggestions asap! I’m looking for orchestra music for my ensemble (strings5,5,4,2, winds3,1,1, perc) that has extremely hard first violin parts and very easy parts for the rest of the orchestra. I was thinking the Vivaldi concerto for four violins is a start...though there are no wind or perc. parts. Any suggestions? Thanks! Answer: We carry several items in which the winds are optional (listed as “Playable Strings Only”) thus allowing the music to be performed by anywhere between full orchestra to strings only. These are great for the orchestras that have strings and only a few winds. The only thing is that most of these pieces are usually between grade ME and M, so they are unlikely to contain the difficult first violin parts that you are looking for. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, Question: I have a solid grade 4 high school string orchestra (grades 9-12). We would like to do one of the Mendelssohn Sinfonias for contest, and wonder if there is one that would be appropriate for our grade level. Which would you suggest? Answer: In regards to the Sinfonia, I cannot say which exact one will fill your requirements. In general, the first 8 are of moderate difficulty, being about the difficulty of a baroque work. The later ones are much longer and more difficult. I hope this will be of some use to you. Sincerely, Question: I would like to start a concert with some kind of fanfare for brass alone or brass with strings. Something short, an arrangement of could be a fragment of an original piece, what do you suggest? What is used in these cases? Answer: Thank you for your email. We have a couple of pieces such as Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man (#01936) and Dukas La Peri: Fanfare for Brass (#09025), as well as the popular Also Sprach Zarathustra Fanfare (#09361). You can search our Orchestra catalog under either “Fanfare” or “Brass” to see what other suggestions come up. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, Question: I am a high school orchestra director in search of orchestral pieces that include harp. The students that I teach, including the student harpist, perform grade 5/6 music. Could you suggest orchestral pieces (string, full, and pops) that include harp, that would be suitable for a high school orchestra, and harpist, of this ability level? Thank you. Answer: Thank you for your email. The best place to search for compositions with harp is to search through the Educational searchable database on our website at www.lucksmusic.com and select “contains harp” before submitting. If you would like to have a more specialized search, you may select either full or string orchestra titles as well as the difficulty level. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, Question: I'm a member of a local community orchestra, and we’re thinking about producing a CD from our live concert performances as a fund-raising vehicle. Are there copyright issues that we would need to resolve as we make our plans for this project? We have our own library of purchased music, and also rent from Luck’s on a regular basis. Is there any way to find out if a particular edition of a score would require copyright clearance before a CD is made? Thanks for your help. Answer: Thank you for your email. The best place to check for performance and recording rights is through ASCAP, who may be contacted at (212)595-3050. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, Question: We are planning a string orchestra concert featuring world music. Do you have any suggestions of moderately difficult works for high school string orchestra which are based on music of African, Asian, or Latin music? Thank you. Answer: Thank you for your email. You may find the information you are searching for at www.lucksmusic.com through our searchable database, the most comprehensive database of its kind. Just select the appropriate catalog and from here you may search on the composer, title, catalog number, ensemble type, and theme to name a few. Selecting a title will reveal its instrumentation, timing, prices, and other useful information and comments. You may search in our Educational database and select String Orchestra, Medium level of difficulty, and International theme to see your selections. If you still are not able to locate the information you need, please contact me. Thank you, Question: I'm working on a master's course of advance conducting and I'm looking for Vivaldi's Gloria score for choir and orchestra. Can I purchase it from you, and if I can please let me know how much would it cost. Answer: Thank you for your email. Do you know which edition of Vivaldi's Gloria you are requiring? We carry two editions: Malipiero edition (#09550, sc $31.00) and the Westermann edition (#05441, sc $50.00). These editions are not compatible with each other. Please let us know which edition you need. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, Question: I am looking for the parts to Vaughan Williams' Concerto for Bass Tuba. I cannot find it anywhere; if you can help in anyway I would be most appreciative! Thank you. Answer: Thank you for your email. We actually only carry the mini score ($14.50) and the tuba solo parts ($15.95) to the Vaughn Williams Tuba Concerto (#O11003). The actual orchestral parts will be available for rental only through Oxford (phone (212)726-6049; fax (212)726-6444). If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you, Question: Your catalog item #07687 the Vivaldi Concerto for 2 violins Op.3 No.8 arranged by Sam Franko implies it can be played by 2 violas instead of 2 violins. Is this arrangement in the original key of a minor or is it arranged in d minor? My local orchestra is to perform this with 2 youth concerto winners on 2 violas and they perform it in the lower key. Your help would be much appreciated. Answer: Thank you for your email. The edition we carry is in key of a minor. We were unable to locate an addition in d minor. Thank you, Question: We are planning a Pops Concert similar to the PBS Specials that have recently aired with Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Les Miserables, and a Toast of Broadway. The shows were basically musicals without the acting parts. All the major solos and chorus numbers were with full orchestra. Do you know if arrangements like this are available for any musical. I remember Bernstein conducting Westside Story about 20 years ago in a similar fashion. We have excellent musicians so difficulty level is not an issue. Answer: The concert
performances are from the original broadway scores and are not arrangements.
Unfortunately, we do not carry the complete works or much in the way of
the songs (with vocals) from
Sarah Brightman (and I'm sure Charlotte Church too) carry their own music so you might have to contact the recording company to find out where you will be able to rent the music. Thank you, Question: I am trying to find out which music publishing company rents the Ancient Airs and Dances by Ottorino Respighi. (the one for strings only, no winds) I am not having very much luck on the internet. Can you please help me? Answer: You will be able to rent Ancient Airs and Dances Suite #3 (for strings) directly through Boosey and Hawkers. You may contact them directly by phone at (212)358-5300 or by fax at (212)358-5307. Thank you, Question: I am planning a Christmas concert on the 21.of December. I'd like to let the orchestra play some of these well known arrangement from the Boston Pops and also the 'Sleigh ride' from Leroy Anderson. Some colleagues told me about your variety in this music. Can you give me some titles (with prices) of such arrangements (if possible with CD). Answer: Thank you for your email. Anderson and John Williams pieces stick out in our minds when thinking of the Boston Pops. Unfortunately, there are not that many Christmas pieces by either:
We suggest for other Christmas pieces, to browse through our Christmas catalog on-line. There we have several Christmas pieces (both sacred and secular). Thank you, Question: I am trying to find some information on a piece called"The Worried Drummer" by Adolf Schreiner (pub. Luck's Music Library). This is a novelty piece that is quite old and I'm being featured on this piece. What I'm interested in finding is a CD, tape or video of this piece. It would be nice to hear the piece before I have to solo with the symphony. Would you have any leads or resources? I'm not having much luck and any help would be much appreciated!!! Thank you. Answer: Unfortunately, Luck's Music carries sheet music only, so we do not carry recordings. You may contact your local or on-line record stores to see if they have a recording available. Thank you, Question: I am a classically trained clarinetist looking for full orchestra (clarinet) parts to use in preparation for auditions. Do you know where I can pay for parts which are not illegal photocopies? Answer: We sell printed orchestral parts including individual clarinet parts. You may browse through our Orchestral catalog for music. The individual part prices are in the column marked "extra strings". If you are interested, you may submit a list of parts you are looking for and I can quote you on price and availability. Thank you, Question: I'm looking for a full or study score for Henri Tomasi's Trumpet Concerto. Could you point me in the right direction? Answer: Unfortunately, the Tomasi Trumpet Concerto is available for rental only. You may contact either Boosey & Hawkes (phone (212)358-5300; fax (212)358-5307) or G. Schirmer (phone (845)469-2271; fax (845)469-7544). Thank you, Question: I need to rent orchestra parts to operatic soprano arias which I will be performing. Can you help me? Answer: We have several arias available separately from the complete opera, of which are available for purchase and/or for rental. Which arias would you like? In our Orchestral catalog, you will find the items listed in alphabetical order first by composer, then by title. The arias will be listed in alphabetical order under their respective opera. If you do not see the aria you are searching for, please contact us as we have additional arias upon request. Thank you, Question: What are the specs of Leo DeLibe's "Flower Duet" and how much is it to purchase or rent for full instrumentation? I heard it on the radio and think it is programmable for our orchestra. I think it is mostly, if not wholly for winds, if I remember correctly. Thanks for any assistance. Answer: The instrumentation
is as follows to the Delibes Flower Duet: 2222/3000, strings, and solo
soprano and mezzo soprano. The Duet is available for purchase only (score
$15.00, set of parts (wind Thank you, Question: I would like to know where I can rent/buy G. Gershwin's Promenade (Walking the dog) for clarinet solo and orchestra. David Daniels has it listed as G. Schirmer, but they don't have it. Can you get it for me? Answer: Unfortunately, we do not carry Gershwin's Promenade (Walking the dog). You may want to check with Warner Brothers to see if they have the Promenade available for rental. You may contact them by phone at (305)521-1604 or by fax at (305)521-1638. I Thank you, Question: I was wondering if you guys have A. Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in A minor Op.3 No.6 for violin and piano. If you do what is the fastest way I can get it and what is the price. Answer: Thank you
for your email. We have two different editions of the Vivaldi
The Einstein edition is the more popular edition, however, we can also send you scores to each for perusal. Shipping costs and times depend on where you are located. Within the U.S., shipping costs start at $6.65 and average about 4-6 business days. We can ship the music by 2-Day and Next-Day UPS as well. Both editions are readily available, so there should not be a delay when shipping your order. Thank you, Question: We have just ordered the Harry Potter Suite from you. Could you please inform us of the instrumentation. Answer: John Williams loves to compose with many winds, so the instrumentation includes: flute I (doubles on alto flute), flute 2 (doubles on Piccolo), Piccolo (doubles on flute and alto flute), 2 oboes, English Horn (doubles on Oboe), Clarinet 1 (doubles on A Clarinet), Clarinet 2 (doubles on A clarinet and Bb Bass Clarinet), Bb Bass Clarinet (doubles on Bb Clarinet and Eb Piccolo Clarinet), 2 Bassoons, Contra Bassoon (doubles on Bassoon), 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, 3 percussion parts (I'm not sure how many copies of each are included - the Brubaker arrangement includes 13 percussion parts, so I'd expect this to be about the same or more), harp, piano/Celesta, and strings. Thank you, Question: Three questions: (1) Are there string orchestra arrangements other more popular Christmas carols? Nothing fancy. Are they available for rental? (2) Are there string orchestra arrangements of various movements from "Nutcracker"? I already have "Mother Ginger". Are there others? Are they available for rental? (3)Do you have any suggestions for other "seasonal" type pieces for small string orchestra (5-4-3-3-1 and harpsichord)I already have Corelli's "Christmas Concerto", and a few non-Christmas pieces. This is for a professional orchestra, but with only one rehearsal. Answer: There are a few places that you can check for Christmas themes pieces for string orchestra. You may look in our Educational catalog under the string orchestra half of the catalog. After the general list, is a separate listing of Christmas titles just for string orchestra. You can also look in the second half of our Pops and Christmas catalog. This catalog actually lists the titles and instrumentation of each piece, as well as some additional information of interest. The Christmas section is broken into several different categories including Mannheim Steamroller, Secular, Sacred, lesser known works, Hanukah, Christmas Sing-A-Longs, and Educational Full or String orchestral works. The items listed in our Educational catalog are listed in the Christmas Catalog, however, the Christmas catalog lists additional information on each piece, while the Educational catalog list price information. Other titles in the Christmas catalog that are not listed in our Educational catalog will be listed in our Orchestral catalog (main body and Pops section). We do have a few pieces arranged for string orchestra from the Nutcracker including Waltz of the Flowers, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Trepak, March, as well as a Nutcracker Suite. Thank you, Question: I am looking for a string orchestra piece that will feature an All-State level bass player. I am looking for a classical piece and not something on the novelty side. The remainder of the orchestra is at a grade 3 to low 4 level. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Answer: You might want to take a look at our website (www.lucksmusic.com) and click on Educational under SPECIFIC CATALOG SEARCH – select “String Orchestra w/solo” from the CATEGORY pull down menu and type in the word “Bass” in the TITLE field. This will provide you with appropriate selections. Some will have sound files and scores available to help evaluate the work. Thank you,
